This book poignantly articulates and crystalizes all of the most invaluable lessons I have learned over nearly thirty years of engaging with seniors, from childhood volunteering in nursing homes to a career that started on the frontline of Aging-in-Place retirement residences. Today, being in business leadership with Element Lifestyle Retirement, the mission is to positively revolutionize the perception and experience of aging. I have met many seniors and their families, and witnessed two diametric scenarios: (1) “proactive” retirees and seniors who embrace and anticipate what is ahead, and are excited about possibilities; (2) “reactive” retirees and seniors who fear and avoid considering the implications of living a great number of years in retirement. These two contrasting mental constructs give rise to vastly different practical realities. The first group goes on to enjoy an outstanding quality of life, with peace of mind, vibrancy, sense of meaning, and passion to live every day fully. Unfortunately, the “reactive” group suffers otherwise preventable traumatizing consequences of moving to a new home when they need to, not when they desire to, while also facing financial limitations that become increasingly restrictive the longer they live.
The overarching concept of taking “smart risk” and practicing thoughtful, advanced planning is highly relevant and important for all of us. I believe the wisdom Maili has shared will positively impact the lives of families globally.
